about

This wonderful song was written and played by the Warumpi Band way back in 1983. They were one of the first Australian indigenous bands to gain mainstream popularity. They were from Papunya in the central desert region of the Northern Territory, near Alice Springs. We feel that this is an important song about getting on well together, no matter what culture you are from. Madeline has spent quite a bit of time in the desert working with Aboriginal communities, so it was great for her to sing the song. lyrics

Blackfella whitefella
It doesn't matter, what your colour
As long as you are, a true fella
As long as you are, a real fella
All the people of different races, with different lives, in different places
It doesn't matter, what your name is
We've gotta have, lots of changes
We need more brothers, if we're to make it
We need more sisters, if we're to save it

Are you the one who’s gonna stand up and be counted?
Are you the one who’s gonna be there when we shout it?
Are you the one who’s always ready with a helping hand?
Are you the one who understands this family plan?

Blackfella whitefella yellowfella any fella
It doesn’t matter, what you’re colour, as long as you are a real fella
All the people, of different races, with different lives, in different places
It doesn’t matter, which religion
It’s all the same when the ship is sinking
We need more brothers if we’re to make it
We need more sisters if we’re to save it

Stand up, stand up and be counted!
